Edie had closed the browser and hadn’t looked at social media since. She had no interest in the lives or opinions of any of those hateful people. She and Ryan and Jake – they were better than them, they always had been. The three of them were a class apart.

But that was then. Now, as she got up from the table, tossing Ryan’s unopened letter into the bin, Edie caught sight of her reflection in the window pane. Her pale face looked back at her, miserable and lonely as a ghost.

Edie left the house in darkness. It was dangerous, with her poor eyesight, to run before sunrise. But she had little choice, since the sun only rose at eight in the morning at this time of year – and on some days barely seemed to bother to rise at all. She had to run. Running was the only thing keeping her sane. So she got up, laced her trainers, put on her head torch and set out in the dark, taking off through the trees, where wisps of fog snagged on black branches, hanging like spectres.

Back at the house, her limbs like lead, she was just about to get into the shower when her phone rang. She was tempted to ignore it – phone calls were never good news these days. But when she saw Lara’s name on the screen, her spirits lifted. She answered. She listened to Lara chattering away. She was rushed off her feet on her latest visit to London, dashing from meeting to meeting, to her favourite hairdresser to get her colour done, to the optician to get new contact lenses. Then more meetings, and then possibly a date later on, though she wasn’t sure he was her type.

Edie tried to respond in kind. She tried to keep things light, but found that she couldn’t. She was ashamed to hear herself launching into a self-pitying speech about how lonely she was, how exhausted she felt. How she couldn’t concentrate on books, and how watching TV made her more miserable still. It didn’t matter what she watched, whether it was comedy or drama or a wildlife documentary, she found herself wanting to turn, as she always did, to Jake to discuss it with him.

Lara’s voice was reassuringly warm. ‘Do you know what you need, Edie? A companion. You should get a dog. There’s a rescue place over—’

‘I’m not a dog person,’ Edie said.

‘Well, they have cats, too. You can’t run with a cat, of course, but they can be quite soothing.’

‘I don’t really like animals.’

‘Okay.’ Lara sounded disappointed.

‘Not liking animals doesn’t make me a bad person.’

Lara laughed. ‘Of course not! Look, I was just trying to think of something that might cheer you up …’

‘I was wondering about trying your podcast thing. You know, one of your stories,’ Edie said. ‘I got a marketing email the other day – yesterday, in fact – and I was thinking, maybe listening to something might help me sleep.’

‘Oh, yes – they’re brilliant for that.
