Edie had closed the browser and hadnât looked at social media since. She had no interest in the lives or opinions of any of those hateful people. She and Ryan and Jake â they were better than them, they always had been. The three of them were a class apart.
But that was then. Now, as she got up from the table, tossing Ryanâs unopened letter into the bin, Edie caught sight of her reflection in the window pane. Her pale face looked back at her, miserable and lonely as a ghost.

Edie left the house in darkness. It was dangerous, with her poor eyesight, to run before sunrise. But she had little choice, since the sun only rose at eight in the morning at this time of year â and on some days barely seemed to bother to rise at all. She had to run. Running was the only thing keeping her sane. So she got up, laced her trainers, put on her head torch and set out in the dark, taking off through the trees, where wisps of fog snagged on black branches, hanging like spectres.
Back at the house, her limbs like lead, she was just about to get into the shower when her phone rang. She was tempted to ignore it â phone calls were never good news these days. But when she saw Laraâs name on the screen, her spirits lifted. She answered. She listened to Lara chattering away. She was rushed off her feet on her latest visit to London, dashing from meeting to meeting, to her favourite hairdresser to get her colour done, to the optician to get new contact lenses. Then more meetings, and then possibly a date later on, though she wasnât sure he was her type.
Edie tried to respond in kind. She tried to keep things light, but found that she couldnât. She was ashamed to hear herself launching into a self-pitying speech about how lonely she was, how exhausted she felt. How she couldnât concentrate on books, and how watching TV made her more miserable still. It didnât matter what she watched, whether it was comedy or drama or a wildlife documentary, she found herself wanting to turn, as she always did, to Jake to discuss it with him.
Laraâs voice was reassuringly warm. âDo you know what you need, Edie? A companion. You should get a dog. Thereâs a rescue place overââ
âIâm not a dog person,â Edie said.
âWell, they have cats, too. You canât run with a cat, of course, but they can be quite soothing.â
âI donât really like animals.â
âOkay.â Lara sounded disappointed.
âNot liking animals doesnât make me a bad person.â
Lara laughed. âOf course not! Look, I was just trying to think of something that might cheer you up â¦â
âI was wondering about trying your podcast thing. You know, one of your stories,â Edie said. âI got a marketing email the other day â yesterday, in fact â and I was thinking, maybe listening to something might help me sleep.â
âOh, yes â theyâre brilliant for that.
